i took today off…

from reality.

i stayed in my pjs. i did not go to class. i rented movies. yes, in my pjs. i drank coffee all day long. i chatted on the computer. i tweaked the stagger a bit. i listened to this endlessly. i watched cube zero (i would not recommend it but the original cube i definitely would) and vanity fair (a bit scattered and slow but i liked it).

i had to take a mental health day. after the micro test yesterday and all the stuff that has been going on the past few weeks, i needed a few hours to myself in which there were no expectations or goals. which is funny because i ended up getting two of the panels done for the baby quilt i am making for my brother’s new baby. yes, i know it is not due for months and months but i figure if i start it now, it might be done when the child hits about 3-4 years old. i am hoping anyway…

and yes, as a matter of fact the panels are thumbtacked up to the drywall…

kaya did try to get me to do some homework…

but to no avail. so i am off to go putter around my rooms aimlessly.

with enjoyment.

so there.

Schiavo

I thought it might be appropriate to mention the passing of Terri Schiavo this morning in case there are those who don’t follow the news as much as me. I am also doing this at the behest of tofallfromgrace who would like some news discussion included at the Stagger Inn. While I will not take sides on the moral issues surrounding the removal of the feeding tube, I thought it might be appropriate to discuss some of the ramifications of this event.
First, money has long been thought of as the one denominator to getting anything you would like from the U.S. legal system. It would seem that the Schindlers (her parents) had plenty of money to fight Michael Schivao considering they have been going to court for 15 years. Maybe O.J. wasn’t right, money doesn’t buy everything.
Second, very peculiar that while the vactian states “they are opposed to keeping a person alive at all costs — especially if medical intervention prolongs the patient’s agony (CNN).” Does that mean the tube inserted to help prolong the Pope’s life is against their current thinking since some would argue that this is keeping him alive at all costs and prolonging his chronic illnesses?
Lastly, thousands of members of Congress and their aides worked round the clock to pass legislation to save her life most notably Rep. Tom Delay (who has some moral questions of his own to deal with) and all of this culminated into a bill that had the President himself fly overnight to sign. This lead to no avail because nine members of the Supreme Court didn’t even want to hear about it. Nine is more of a majority than thousands, didn’t you know? The voice of the people is heard.
One last thought, I said I wouldn’t take a moral stand although I will on the way Schivao died. Doctors have deemed starving someone as a humane way to die yet consider when we kill any other animal (humans are animals scientifically), i.e. a dog, we euthanize them similar to what Dr. Jack Kevorkian used to do to terminally ill patients. Why is starvation more humane than euthanasia?

First Post

Hi All,
I thought I should give this thing a shot right away while the excitement is high! My name is Tim Esterdahl and I am a Journalism student at Metropolitan State in Denver. I am also a Poly Sci minor with emphasis in International Relations. In a nutshell, this means I will have some very varied posts as I react to world events and speak out about my busy summer.
Speaking of my summer, I will be riding my (soon to purchase)bicycle in 3 events this summer. A first for me doing any sort of endurance event. I have also been selected by the Associated Press along with 11 other college journalists to fly to Seattle. This selection is in leiu of the Diverse Voices contest that I won. This trip will mean I get to work one on one with an AP writer and sponging off this persons knowledge. I am very excited about this trip and my endurance events. I am also happy that Heather (gf) has decided to ride in her first event in July. She has really come along way towards getting in better aerobic shape since I met her and I can’t wait to see her kick butt out there.
As far as work, I am currently a Sales Supervisor at OfficeMax and will shortly be making a lateral move into a Logistical Supervisor role. This job will mean I am in charge of merchandising, replenishment, and the stores environment. It will also mean a set schedule with weekends off! Weekends off is something I thought I would never see. Oddly, I almost feel normal. I will be working 5-2 M-Th and an overnight 9-4 on Friday. This will leave me plenty of time to fill up this server so look out Allison!
I think that is enough for now.

the stagger…

is going to be undergoing a few changes, so please do not be alarmed. we will still have martinis in the cigar lounge and s&m in the basement, so have no worries, dear ones.

a few contributors will be popping up now and again. the stagger occasionally needs a facelift, a polish. hopefully these new voices will entice you to visit more often. we miss you here at the stagger, you know…

so, be kind to the new ones when they decide to come out of hiding and remember: we are open every day of every year.

thanks to colin for the new tag line, what would i do without you? he is also doing some graphics for the title. we will be trying out new title graphics over the course of the next month, so if you have a version you would like the stagger to try out, let me know by emailing me here.

up late late last night…

and up too early this morning. was worth it though. was able to get a lot sorted and had a chance to catch up with jason during a long skype/webcam call.

it was a beautiful day and other than having to deal with unwashed ahab on one side and too tightly coiled codger on the other during micro- i enjoyed my day thoroughly.

house is clean. groceries are purchased. laundry is done. dinner date with jamme was kept. micro study group was productive.

best thing about living alone: buying humane traps for the mice and not getting a lecture about how they will only come back in if you do not kill them.

worst thing about living alone: realizing there is no way in hell you can pick up a glue card with a wiggling rodent on it to carefully “with blunt object remove rodent from card into bucket and deposit one mile away from residence” and not having someone to turn to.

i even had a chance for a long soak and i had not a smidge of guilt as i absorbed deadly trash mag toxins from the people i took into the tub with me.

for the secret society of people who read in the tub: i propose we start a campaign to have magazines and books either laminated or printed on space age waterproof materials.

okay, okay. if i was not both cheap and poor i suppose i could invest in that little ipod gadget and download these things and listen at leisure while soaking in lavend-vanilla-cinna-sugar-peppermint-milk & honey bubbly luxury.

ah, but i would lose the satisfaction of feeling the weight of a good book, the smell of the printed paper and the immense pleasure i get out of searching for and highlighting the smallest grammar and punctuation mistakes.

ah, to be easily amused is to constantly enjoy life. only the boring are bored.

please remind me of this the next time i feel bored.

two things…

first, do not show up late to class or you will be forced to suffer. i slid in a few minutes late to micro today and found the only seat left to be in between the great unwashed and fidget man.

second, triple espressos rock. thank god for the on-campus coffee kiosk or i would be heading to my next class with a pillow under my arm instead of being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

hmm.

i sound like a squirrel.

nuts.

some photos…

i have set up a partial spring break album here.
descriptions are at the bottom of each photo.

i have to get some photos actually developed, as in the whole “going to walmart and putting the instant camera into a paper bag and requesting matte prints and a disk” thing. not sure if i remember how to do this, but i will try to do it soon.

i had fun.

a lot of fun.

too much fun?
